The Igreja Matriz de Machico underwent several restoration works, the most significant in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, without however modifying the organizational scheme of the medieval temple.
The Mother Church was built by the Captains-Donate family at the end of the 15th century. The Chapel of S. João boasts the coat of arms of the Teixeiras and the Chapel of the Holy Spirit exhibits the arms of the Morals. The Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament was instituted by Branca Teixeira, one of the daughters of the first Captain - Donate, and in it was a magnificent Flemish painting, representing the Adoration of the Magi, currently deposited in the Museum of Sacred Art in Funchal. A replica of this Renaissance painting is now in its place.
The Church has undergone successive interventions throughout the centuries. The bell tower was erected in 1853, because the original, probably of late-
-gotica, was demolished for threatening ruin.
The ceiling painting of the church dates from 1933 and is attributed to the painter João Fermino.
The Baptistry and Tower's Coruscant were built in 1963-64.
