Distant just fifteen kilometers from Badajoz, Elvas was a strategic point of the defense lindeira of the nation, in the region of Alto Alentejo. For that reason, it concentrated, throughout the centuries, a powerful defensive system, based on the gentle elevations distributed by the surrounding plain and in the neighboring Guadiana River, being known as Reina de la Frontera.
