It goes back to the context of the Restoration War of Portuguese Independence, when it was first crossed by Matias de Albuquerque (1641). In the same year, it would be redesigned in the moth of Sebastião Frias, when it received the format of a polygon starring. The Genoese Hieronimo Rozzeti traced him a new project (1642), which caused frictions that culminated in the discord of the French military engineer Charles Lassart. It was finally completed and inaugurated in 1648.
