It was founded by Ambrosio O'Higgins on July 16, 1792, named after Villa San José de Maipo, named after San José.
The area is known as Cajon del Maipo, whose route begins in the Vizcachas sector, 25 km away. southeast of Santiago, culminating in Lo Valdés at 93 km. from the capital and 2,000 meters. high.
It is located 52 km away. of Santiago and 967 meters. in the southeast of the capital, by the El Volcán road. Its surface area is 5,070 km2.
It can be reached via Route G-25 and by bus from Terminal San Borja at Central Station.
It is a recreation area for lovers of hiking, photography, mountain and fishing and a resting area for those who like nature and fresh air.
