The Rudolph-Wilde-Park, the Schöneberg city park is located in the Schöneberg district of Berlin. The public green and recreational facilities were named after the first mayor Rudolph Wilde, who became the town hall of the last still independent town of Schöneberg on his own initiative between 1911 and 1914.
View from the Carl-Zuckmayer-Brücke in the western part of the park
The elongated park with an area of seven hectares begins at the town hall and stretches from Martin-Luther-Strasse over 650 meters to the west to the district boundary at Volkspark Wilmersdorf and Kufsteiner Strasse. Tree-lined promenades, play and reclining figures, the monument Carl-Zuckmayer-Brücke with the uppermost underground station Rathaus Schöneberg and the deer fountain in the Kurpark-Engel-Ostteil characterize the image of the heavily frequented park.
Geologically, the garden monument Rudolph-Wilde-Park is located in the branch of the glacial channel of the Grunewald chain of lakes. The area looks to a swampy fen, the end of the last ice age and that from Nollendorfplatz to the Teltowrückens to the Lietzensee floss. An information board on site includes:
“Through the passages this ditch became shallower and the right one saw the channel in a chain smaller and ponds up. Through this channel floss also the Schanze Graben, which the village established also called Haupt-Graben or Fauler Graben, since the Schöneberg sewage would belong there until it was filled in in 1887.
This remaining drainage channel began after the town hall was changed. The duck pond in front of the Rathaus Schöneberg underground station today represents the last eastern body of water of the lowland, which is also around 2.5 kilometers longer and around 150 meters wide inner-city green corridor to the west over the middle Volkspark Wilmers. The side channel, which is located after being followed by sports fields and renovations. Area at Hubertussee Fort and meeting with Herthasee at Koenigssee perpendicular to the Grunewaldrinne.
The gently curved loungers in the western part and the tree-lined paths, which are popular with joggers, on the edge of the river, still show the channel of the meltwater today. It is important that the valley character of the park can be seen at the Rathaus Schöneberg underground station.
