Currently dominated by a statue of King D. Pedro V, the Much Beloved King, Batalha Square was urbanized in 1861, the floor of which was demoted, which forced at the time to work in some of the surrounding buildings.
On the eastern side of the square we can see a mansion built at the end of the 18th century by José Anastácio da Silva da Fonseca, knight of the Royal House. At the time of the Siege of Porto the pro-Miguelist owners left the palace, which made the liberal government there, using it for various public institutions and a blood hospital. It was here that Bernardo de Sá Nogueira, later Marquês de Sá da Bandeira, was hospitalized after he had been seriously injured, and his injured right arm was amputated.
In 1842, it was restored to the owners, and in 1861, when the House ordered the construction of Largo da Batalha to be erected the monument to D. Pedro V, the palace was about a meter higher than the pavement of the square. The House gave the owner 800 milreis of compensation, money used to lower the pavement of the palace.
Praça da Batalha is located in the center of Porto, Portugal.
Tradition tells us that in the tenth century this site was the scene of a bloody battle between the Saracens of Almançor and the inhabitants of Porto, who would eventually be defeated, resulting in the destruction of the city.
In the square is located the Cine-Teatro Batalha.
