The historical information dates back only to the time of the Christian Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, when D. Afonso III (1248-1279) granted the first charter to the village (1259) and will have the first fortifications built, which were not completed.
The Museological Nucleus of Castelo was founded in 1999, by initiative of the Region of Tourism of São Mamede and of the Town Hall of Portalegre, exposing pieces of armaria, of century XV until World War I.
Ranked as National Monument.
