At all hours, a crowd joins in front of the astronomical clock of the old city hall of Prague to see the allegorical figures that give rhythm to the time of day and the night. The building, symbol of the political independence of the Old City, reveals many other riches, being the most incredible underground.
Since the 13th century, the Old Town, a merchant's quarter and the bourgeoisie, obtained its independence letter from the emperor: thus the neighborhood had autonomous jurisdiction until 1784, date in which the four historic cities of Praha would be grouped in one city: (Hradčany, Malá Strana, Old Town and New Town).
In the fourteenth century the decision was made to build a city hall with the purpose of serving as the seat of the independent municipal council. In the absence of financial refusals, the town hall was installed in a small building (the 'Volflin house', which is now the Prague information center), which has been enlarged over the centuries by the purchase of the houses. side, the construction of a tower, a chapel and the east side. This wing was unfortunately destroyed during a bombing in 1945, of which there was only one corner with neo-Gothic windows.
The old city hall is especially known for its astronomical clock, which brings together a multitude of tourists to see painted wooden figures: the apostles, the Christ, the allegories of death and vanity, the archangel Gabriel ... Built in the fifteenth century, the clock has two spheres: the one above indicates the time, but also the position of the sun, the moon and the planets. The second sphere represents an illustrated calendar of the months of the year with its corresponding signs of the zodiac.
It is possible to visit the interior of the city hall: after climbing the 70 m tower, which offers a beautiful panoramic view of the historical center of Prague, you can see the audience and representation rooms, the chapel that protects the gears of the astronomical clock and the incredible labyrinthine subsoil where you can enjoy the ancient remains of the streets, shops and houses of Romanesque and Gothic Prague residents.
