The Professor Djalma Guimarães Mineralogy Museum is a Brazilian museum that deals with mining and world mineralogy. It is located at Praça da Liberdade in Belo Horizonte, and until 2010 it was installed in one of the buildings with more postmodern characteristics in the city, nicknamed "Rainha da Sucata". The building was designed by architects Sylvio de Podestá and Éolo Maia. At first glance, it totally disagrees with the buildings found in the cultural complex of Praça da Liberdade. Combining several materials typically from Minas Gerais, such as ceramics, cement and steel, the construction shocks anyone who sees it because it is extremely splendid and combines geometric shapes that apparently do not communicate with each other.
The museum was created by Mayor Oswaldo Pieruccetti in 1974 and implanted with the collaboration of the administration of the State of Minas Gerais, which transferred the collection of the old Permanent Sample Fair.
Until 1992, the MMPDG operated on Rua da Bahia, on the corner of Avenida Augusto de Lima, where the Belo Horizonte Culture Center operates today. In June 2000, it was reopened through joint efforts by the city of Belo Horizonte, through the Municipal Department of Culture, the State Department of Mines and Energy and COMIG, as an integral part of the mining memorial. In 2010, the museum became part of the Museum of Mines and Metal, created in the same Praça da Liberdade.
The collection has about a thousand samples on display, out of a total of three thousand, 70 to 80% of which come from Minas Gerais, about 10 to 15% from other states, and the rest from other countries.
