It was built by the Senate of Estremoz, taking advantage of one of the most important springs of the downtown area that is located in the Southwest of Rossio Marquês de Pombal, the source of Fonte Nova.
The imposing lake, about 40 meters long, is supplied by an underground canal that runs through the Rossio Marquês de Pombal, which flows into a marble shell.
The well-known statue of the "Gadanha", of the same height of the lake, originates of the Congregation of the Congregados, having been transposed to the center of the lake only in the middle of century XIX. It is also from this time that the statue changes, suddenly, of meaning. Representing, primitively, the god Saturn, symbol of abundance and abundance, becomes known as it is today.
And it is, in fact, like Gadanha that happens to be known and recognized by all, symbolizing the ephemeral and fugacity of life, as evidenced by the inscription on the pedestal.
Important mark of the Baroque period in Estremoz, presents an ironic and contradictory ambiguity. The "Gadanha", which represents the fleetingness and celerity of Time, ends up being eternal, remaining in the collective memory of the city.

When, in 1688, the Rossio of São Brás saw a majestic lake and fountain emerging that, according to eighteenth-century sources, was capable of "quenching the thirst of our entire army." Estremoz could not imagine that this would become one of the their ex libris.
