The municipal museum of fine arts in Ixelles presents a vast panorama of Belgian art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Its collections bring together paintings, sculptures, drawings representing the different artistic currents of this Period: realism, impressionism, luminism, neo-impressionism and symbolism for the nineteenth century and, closer to us, fauvism, expressionism, cubism, surrealism, constructed abstraction and lyrical as well as the main current trends. A sample of Flemish teachers and some representatives of foreign schools complete this set. A collection of affections as well, including the most exhaustive set in the world of Toulouse-Lautrec posters.
The museum regularly organizes temporary exhibitions and has a documentation center.
The last curators of the Municipal Museum of Fine Arts in Ixelles by Jean Coquelet (1958 - 1987), Nicole d'Huart (1987 - 2007) and Claire Leblanc (after 2007)
The Fine Arts Museum of Ixelles was inaugurated on May 31, 1892 by King Leopold II, the Queen and their daughter Princess Clémentine.
The future created first to contain the donation of the painter Edmond De Pratere (1826-1888) and grew rapidly thanks to the donations of generous patrons Léon Gauchez (1825-1907), Fritz Toussaint (1846-1920), Joseph Botte , Octave Maus (1856-1919) and Max Janlet (1903-1976).
Among modernity, the Ixelles museum currently includes new ideas - contemporary artists and a total of 10,000 quality works.
The central core of the Musée d'Ixelles is the most important collection of paintings offered by the painter and patron Fritz Toussaint, which bears the name of the great architect Joseph Poelaert, husband of his sister Léonie Toussaint.
A room in the Museum of Ixelles thus named after Fritz Toussaint.
