The island of Mozambique, located on the east coast of Africa and surrounded by the Indian Ocean, constituted, in the 15th and 16th centuries, an important strategic point on the Portuguese commercial route to India.
At the end of the 16th century, the two fortresses, the hospital, the various churches and the religious houses testified to the importance that the island had acquired.
The seventeenth century constituted, in the history of the Island of Mozambique, a troubled time. With the Dutch perceiving the strategic importance of that territory, several assaults and attempted occupations took place, including the sieges of 1607 and 1608, which caused enormous damage in the city. It was also during this period that the Jesuits settled there, and that the export trade of slaves to Brazil began.
In the 19th century, the Island of Mozambique declined in importance. Focused on the slave trade, facts such as the independence of Brazil in 1822, and the abolition of slavery in 1837, contributed to its decline. As a result, in the middle of the nineteenth century, the Island is open to the black population and a natural partition gives the space an original feature: on the one hand the stone and lime city, with the remaining testimonies of the Portuguese presence, and on the other side, the city of macúti, built by the natives with the materials and constructive techniques inherent to their culture.
