Some authors refer to it as a chancel of an incomplete hermitage, others are of the opinion that it will be an autonomous architectural unit, being of Muslim origin or influence. Its purity and geometric simplicity may also imply a rural interpretation of the Renaissance.

The Hermitage of Santa Margarida is one of the simplest and at the same time, curious constructions of this type in the municipality of Estremoz. Located not far from the Gate of the Sun of Evoramonte Castle, it is defined by a very simple architecture, based on geometric forms. The body is a cube, the dome a half sphere, topped by a parallelepiped and pyramid.
