Em estilo neoclássico, a casa era o antigo Palácio Imperial que D. Pedro II mandou construir em 1848. Os jardins, desenhados por Jean Baptiste Binot sob a orientação pessoal do imperador, merecem destaque. Além de guardar os objetos e móveis do palácio, o Museu ainda reúne relíquias do Brasil Império como, por exemplo, a coroa de D. Pedro II. Há também no local uma pinacoteca e o Arquivo Histórico do Museu Imperial.
