Its structure dates back to the time of the Philippine dynasty, when Philip II of Spain entrusted the military engineer and Neapolitan architect frei Giovanni Vicenzo Casale to elaborate a study to improve the defensive system of the Bar of Lisbon (1586), then under threat of English corsairs and Dutch. It is Casale - also in charge of the works of expansion of the Torre de Belém and the Fort of the Dry Head the author of the traces of this fortification, begun in 1590.
At present, its space functions as a vacation colony of the Institute of Odivelas.
It is considered the main fortification between the Citadel of Cascais and the Fort of São Julião da Barra.
It was classified as Property of Public Interest through Decree No. 129 of September 29, 1977.
