What remains of the castle of Faro, is part of a defensive structure of the city, that must have Roman origin and was later reinforced by the Arabs. The castle seems to have been built, after the Christian Reconquista of the Peninsula, on the Alcáçova of Muslim origin.
In 1596, Faro was attacked by English forces, looted and burned, and had to be rebuilt over several years, and as early as the 17th century, more works adapted the castle and city walls for use of artillery.
In the 18th century, the castle was the headquarters of the Artillery Regiment of the Kingdom of the Algarve and in the late nineteenth century, was leased to a company that converted it into an alcohol factory.
The changes made, to function as a factory, greatly adulterated the castle, which was also the victim of the opening of a street through the walls, the current Rua do Castelo.
