The Protestant St. Thomas Church of the parish district of Berlin Stadtmitte, at the public end of Mariannenplatz in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg, is located on the late classicist church building from the 19th century. St. Thomas war about the geographical center of the densely populated Luisenstadt Berlin. At the time of its construction, the church with 3000 seats was the modern sacred building in Berlin and the St. Thomas parish with around 150,000 contacts was one of the political evangelical parishes in the world.
The building floor plan has the shape of a Latin cross. A 56 meter high dome rises in the center, and two 48 meter high towers are located in the direction of Mariannenplatz.
The name St. Thomas refers to the apostle Thomas.
The St. Thomas Church was administered between 1865 and 1869 by the architect Friedrich Adler, a student of Friedrich August Stülers, on behalf of the Berlin city administration. For the architect, the building that made him famous throughout Germany was the breakthrough for his career. The large organ with 52 registers came from Wilhelm Sauer.
On November 22nd, 1942 the choir windows and the eastern gallery of the church. The interior was lost in the war and lost in the early post-war years. The reconstruction between 1956 and 1963 by Werner Retzlaff and Ludolf von Walthausen. The outer facade was reconstructed according to historical templates, the interior indulgent indulgent.
If the church is closed in 1985 because of asbestos contamination and in 1998 because of a renewed renovation of the outer facade, the church has been recovered since 1999.
The parish of St. Thomas had around 150,000 parishioners until the Görlitzer Bahnhof was separated from the newly formed Emmaus parish in 1887, and was thus one of its own parishes.
With the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, the municipal administration and the delay of the city, the city and the west of West Berlin became. The political interests relationships in Kreuzberg can affect the community, which turn an active role in the squatting in the social years.
