The Djalma Maranhão Museum of Popular Culture is located at Largo Dom Bosco Square Augusto Severo, in the Ribeira neighborhood, in Natal, Brazil. It is housed in the building of the former Natal bus station that was completely redesigned to house the museum.
The museum aims to preserve the potiguar popular culture in a space of about 350 square meters, where is exhibited a collection of approximately 1,500 pieces, of about 400 popular artists. The visitor can also access the "electronic totems", which allow to know in texts, photos and videos a little of the life and work of the popular artists potiguares. In addition there are three large screens installed in special rooms that display over 200 hours of video continuously. The museum also has space for temporary exhibitions.
It opened on August 22, 2008, the day of folklore.
The exhibition of the collection is divided into four modules:
The enchanted world of RN revelry and traditional dances;
The magical world, charms and enchantments of João Redondo;
Knowledge and practices of the Potiguar people;
Acts and memory, the art, faith and religiosity of the people.
