The village of São Bento do Ameixial would already have existed in 1258, judging by the information of the first formo of Estremoz, with the name Aldeia do Penedo.
According to Túlio Espanca, the parish church was founded in the early 16th century as a commendation of the Order of Avis, having been visited ecclesiastically in 1534.

Its present appearance is more consistent with the 17th-century or 18th-century rural buildings of Alentejo, although it maintains the cylindrical outer angular towers of the presbytery that point to the Manueline period.
It has two lateral crosses to the main door, made in polychrome tiles typical of the seventeenth century. Of artistic interest is also the lavatory of the marble sacristy, with wreaths of scrolls with winding, dated of 1698.
