Nossa Senhora da Luz Church in Morro de São Paulo was built in several stages over many years. The change from the old chapel that was collapsing next to the Lighthouse to the center of the village began in 1628. It ended in the late 18th century, beginning of the 19th century. The name of the Church is a tribute to the patron saint of the place .

Built in the Baroque style, the Morro de São Paulo Church had a rich history in its history with gold, silver and sacred images. It was the target of many robberies and piracy, having been looted several times. The last and largest of all lasted approximately 8 years, starting in 1996 and ending in 2004. Virtually the entire collection was stolen, there were pieces dated in 1630 like a crown purchased in Portugal. The perpetrator of these robberies was a native of the place.

Considered a historical heritage, but not listed by the National Artistic Historical Heritage Institute, the Church overcame the wear and tear that time itself has been making. The images and the altar made of wood in its neoclassical Baroque style were destroyed by termites, a sample of the neglect on the part of the government and community of Morro de São Paulo. Since 2004, a restoration has been carried out both abroad and in its sacred images and external installations. The cost of this renovation is entirely donated by residents and tourists who make their donations to keep this beautiful piece of history standing.

A curiosity is that if we look at the floor of the Nossa Senhora da Luz Church we will see several tombstones of ancient natives and residents were buried. The oldest date is 1869.
