Charlottenburg Castle, in German Schloss Charlottenburg, is a former royal palace of the Kingdom of Prussia, located in the town of Charlottenburg, Berlin's Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district, Germany. The palace belongs to the Berlin-Brandenburg Foundation of Prussian Palaces and Gardens.
The palace was initially named Lietzenburg, having been built in the Italian Baroque style, between 1695 and 1699, by the architect Johann Arnold Nering by order of Sofia Carlota of Hanover, the wife of the Brandenburg Prince-elector Frederico III. After the coronation of Frederick as king Frederick I of Prussia and Sophie Charlotte as queen, in 1701, the building, initially conceived as a summer palace, was magnificently enlarged by the architect Eosander von Göthe. After the death of his wife, in 1705, Frederick gave the name of Charlotte to the palace and the adjacent town. Between 1709 and 1712, the palace would be enlarged, once again, receiving a courtyard of honor, an impressive dome and an Orangerie located to the west. Schloss Charlottenburg was originally assigned a Bernsteinzimmer, a room completely covered in amber, later known as the "eighth wonder of the world". This was designed by the architect and sculptor Andreas Schlüter. This achievement was the first work entrusted to the Danish ambarist Gottfried Wolffram, probably in the service of Frederick I since 1701. In 1706, the performance was transferred to two artists from Danzig, now Gdańsk, Ernst Schacht and Gottfried Turau, for the price of Wolfframs considered too high. The decoration designed for this room has remained unknown for a long time - red damask is now considered safe. In 1712 the work was still mentioned, however the work in Charlottenburg would never be completed. Parts of the amber wall covering were taken to the Berliner Stadtschloss, where they were installed in an office adjacent to the White Room. In 1716, the Bernsteinzimmer was offered by Frederick William I to the Russian tsar Pedro the Great, his ally at the time, who, in thanks, sent him 55 soldiers from his guard. The amber room was then installed in the Catherine Palace, in Tsarskoye Selo, where it still remains.
