On September 25, 1924, the official inauguration of the San Cristobal hill funicular took place. It was created thanks to the initiative of Mayor Alberto Mackenna.
The funicular runs almost 500 meters on a 45 degree inclined plane from the Bellavista neighborhood.
The funicular has two cars, one of which carries a reminder sign that mentions that John Paul II climbed into that car in 1987, when he was going to celebrate a mass at the virgin's feet at the top of the hill. In an article published in the newspaper La Tercera, in the coming years there will be a similar funicular, but this time going up the Recoleta Commune, towards the Virgin of the Morro de San Cristobal.
It is located on San Cristobal Hill in Providencia.
It is a must see for tourists and Santiago, on the weekend, has two seasons, one to visit the zoo and another to reach the summit.
Declared National Monument.
