The Abasto neighborhood is close to the city center. Its main avernida is Corrientes, where the most important theaters are. It is, at the same time, a middle-class residential area as well as offices and shops. Historically, the Abasto neighborhood is associated with the tango singer Carlos Gardel, the most famous in our country between the 20s and 30s. In this neighborhood, as in the adjacent Once, a large Jewish community is living. In this neighborhood there is also one of the main shopping malls in the city: Abasto Shopping center.
El Abasto (now some people call it Palermo Green) is an area of the City of Buenos Aires within the Balvanera neighborhood and part of Almagro, popularly identified with this name since in its center is the old Buenos Aires Abasto Market , currently a shopping center. The Abasto shopping center is the center of this undeclared neighborhood. In this area the famous singer Carlos Gardel grew up being called ´´Morocho del Abasto´´.
The neighborhood is recognized as one of the most tango neighborhoods in the city, as tributes, the street ´´Carlos Gardel´´ has a pedestrian section, there is a monument to Gardel and a monument to the bandoneon is planned.

The Mercado del Abasto, the center of the neighborhood, operated until 1984, the year it was closed. Its closure forced a renovation of most of the nearby stores.
The market was reopened in 1998, as a shopping center.
The Abasto neighborhood is mentioned in the Sumo song Mañana de sol.
With its design inspired by the Les Halles building in Paris, the Mercado del Abasto stopped working with its fruit and vegetable stalls in 1984. For more than ten years it knew neglect but not oblivion.
At the end of the 90s, the appearance of foreign capital rebounded its recovery and caused the reopening of the old market, which was converted into a modern shopping center.
That is how the Abasto shopping mall, measuring 120 thousand square meters, was born in November 1998. From then on, the area regained brightness and the Abasto was transformed into a cultural, tourist and recreational center.
In March 2000 the statue of Carlos Gardel was inaugurated in the corner of the passage that bears his name. Mounted on a one meter sixty red granite pedestal, the figure that pays homage to Morocho del Abasto reaches 2.40 meters and was made by the sculptor Mariano Pagés.
Today, the Abasto houses artists, artisans, musicians, art galleries, ateliers, cultural centers and museums. And several international hotel chains have taken their eyes to settle there.
The Abasto de Buenos Aires was the concentrating market for vegetables and fruits in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 1893 to 1984. In 1999 it was converted into a shopping center, the Abasto Shopping Center. This neighborhood is also famous for being a tango area, where the singer Carlos Gardel lived most of his life
Today the Abasto is formed in part by Balvanera and other neighboring neighborhoods, which are called by extension, El Abasto.
