The St.-Johannes-Evangelisten-Kirche is a Protestant church in the Mitte part of Berlin's Mitte district, which was built between 1898 and 1900. It belongs to the Protestant parish am Weinberg in the parish of Berlin Stadtmitte. The addition to the name indicates that it belongs to John the Evangelist, not John the Baptist.
The church is located in the Spandauer Vorstadt district and is there at Auguststrasse 90, directly in line with the houses.
Since 1825, the rights of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Stadt, which was established in Spandauer Vorstadt, died so quickly that the St.-Philippus-Apostel-Kirche died in 1851/1852 as a branch of the Sophienkirche. In 1856 not only this part of the community became independent, also the area between Ziegelstraße (today: Tucholskystraße) and Friedrichstraße of the still large Sophien-Parochie was the newly founded Johannes-Evangelist
You don't have to own a church. It was not until 1859 that a small brick chapel with a turret and a rectory were sold to the owners on Auguststrasse 90 through a private initiative. In 1897 this building was abandoned.
According to Max Spitta's design and under the direction of the Bürkner building council, a judgment in the years 1898 to 1900 dismissed the church that is still standing today. It was to be inaugurated on September 19, 1900.
His war in the parish of the Johannes Evangelist congregation had been very tight from the start. When the anticipatory expansion of the inner city around 1900 also encompassed northern Friedrichstrasse and displaced the residential communities, the number of parishioners decreased again.
During World War II an incendiary bomb traffic the street-side ornamental gable and the roof turret. After simplified representation in the first years of the church to be consecrated again in 1957.
As ruins and fallow land, the area of the community and the number of members were further decimated, the parish was resolutely dissolved in 1978 and governments were governed by the three neighboring communities. This was transferred to the legal succession and thus ownership of the building to the Sophiengemeinde. How the church was already at this point no longer for sacred rights, as it was already through a lease and the Humboldt University was at war, which it as a book magazine füritk na nahhegel.
When the lease expired in the summer of 2002, de Universitätsmagazin received the St. John Evangelist Church and returned its belongings. On January 10, 2003, it was re-inaugurated by Bishop Wolfgang Huber. Something happened, the dedication service was held a 10 p.m. These war harvests will be because they only give church services here on the last Friday of the month at this time.
Since November 2010 you have been holding recurring Sunday services in the St. John Evangelist Church. These relevant “workshop services” begin at 11 o'clock and undergo a church distant, skeptic and doubter. They are run by the Protestant cultural workshop in Berlin-Mitte and are called Freischwimmer - Kirche zum Auftauchen.
In addition, the building is mainly used as a cultural church for events such as exhibitions and concerts.
At Auguststrasse 90 it is a typical house plot that was actually intended for the construction of a separate residential building with a side wing and rear building. Thus, the building, which by law is very important for a church building. Although it was no longer lost for church buildings dating back to 1900 that they were not in representative places, instead of being in the rows of houses, the spatial conditions were seldom the same as here. The area was quickly completely built over. The longitudinal wall and the fire walls of the neighboring properties, which have failed to allow windows to be opened here, run. Access to the interior was only given light from above through the glass roof.
The church shows itself in neo-Romanesque forms. The clinker-clad facade is given over to the street front by an eyelid. In the same restrained posture of the wall, a rose window above the entrance hall, which is crowned by a gable field with three acoustic arcades that towers above the eaves. There was no space for a separate tower; a tall, slate-covered roof turret - which was not sold after it was destroyed in the war - towered over the gable.
The church space is as a longitudinal construction option and in three arched yoke arrangements. These are carried by bundles of piers, which stand in front of drawn-in buttresses, distinguish between stitch caps. The organ gallery belongs on the entrance side, further galleries run on the sides between the buttresses. The altar niche is part of the apse, which was decorated with ancient mosaic. Arches, vault ribs, and buttresses are behind sandstone. The church offered space for 736 seats. In the three years in which the light is heard through skylights with a face five meters each. These glass domes were adorned with old colored ornamental glass.
From the colored skylights created the incidence of light from domed buildings, the room, together with the lost apse mosaic, may have perceived a mystical-sacred one.
