This important property has housed the Acapulco Historical Museum since 1986, under the administration of the National Institute of Anthropology and History, which includes thirteen exhibition rooms through which the museum aims to identify the inhabitants of the state of Guerrero with the most important moments. important parts of its history and promote culture.

In 1615, the conquerors, alarmed by the pirate attacks, ordered the construction of a fort, that of San Diego, Adrián Boot, who had intervened in the construction of the Fort of San Juan de Ulúa, in Veracruz, made the project and led out the edification. After six months, the Knights of the King, The Prince and The Duke, corresponding to the band of land and its canvases, had been completed. Los Caballeros de Guadalcázar, El Marqués and the ramparts were under construction when an earthquake affected the work. The repairs, the portal and the drawbridge were made, thus, two years later the fort was completed. Artillery tests were carried out in which the bullets reached the tip of the tap, closing with them the access to the bay, it also had barracks, a house for the Castilian, that of the constable and a weapons room. In 1776, the San Diego fort was renovated by the engineer Miguel de Constanzo, leaving a pentagonal esplanade with five bastions. By 1783, the work was finished, it had room for two thousand men with food and drinking water for the whole year. Later it was a convent, hospital and prison.



During the Independence, José María Morelos took it in 1813 during a night assault. It served as a shelter for many families and the army officers who guarded it. It is said that the famous phrase was born there: Long live Spain, sister, but not the dominator of America!
