It is the only protected maritime area in Peru. Here live sea lions, Humboldt penguins, dolphins, flamingos or parihuanas and other birds.
The Paracas National Reserve was created on September 25, 1975. It was created to conserve part of Peru's sea and desert, protecting the various species of wild flora and fauna that inhabit it.
Part of the Reserve's surface, specifically 217,594 hectares, consists of aquatic environments (for many, the richest sea on the planet).
Due to its importance as a resting place and food for migratory species in 1991, it was elevated to the category of Regional Reserve of the Hemispheric Coastal Bird Network (currently the "Wetlands for the Americas" Program).
