The Museum of Image and Sound of São Paulo (MIS) is a state public museum, linked to the Secretariat of Culture, opened in 1970. It is the result of a project started a few years earlier by intellectuals and cultural producers, such as Ricardo Cravo Albin, Paulo Emilio Salles Gomes, Rudá de Andrade, Francisco Luiz de Almeida Salles and Luiz Ernesto Machado Kawall.
Located in Jardim Europa, Pinheiros district, its philosophy of action is to record and preserve the image and sound of the past and present, for a survey of a panel of Brazilian life in its human, social and cultural aspects. In the 70's and 80's, it stood out as an important nucleus of artistic and educational diffusion, becoming a reference center for Brazilian audiovisual research.
Its collection has more than 200 thousand items and currently has a diverse cultural program, aimed at various audiences. It has gained prominence in the critics and the media for its well-elaborated exhibitions and on big names in contemporary art, cinema, music, as well as giving space to new artists.
