Palenque is a classic Mayan city, contemporary and military ally of the great city of Tikal in the 7th century. Palenque is visited by more than half a million people a year, of which, according to studies, only 20,000 continue their journey to the department of Petén. When we hear about this place, we imagine that it is extremely far from the central area of Petén, when only 340 kilometers separate us, a journey that takes place in just under 4 hours.
The Mayan city of Palenque is considered medium in size when compared to the great Tikal, El Mirador or Yaxha. It is slightly smaller in size than the Mayan city of Nakum in the municipality of Melchor in Petén. However, its architectural features are of great importance, as are its elaborate tombs, including the famous Pakal tomb and the inscriptions located on the slopes of the temple of the inscriptions, slightly smaller than those found in Copan. The archaeological site has a length of 2.5 km2. with just over 500 structures. It was declared a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1987.
