The Jewish Museum (in German: Jüdisches Museum Berlin), belonging to the Berlin Museum, shows, through artistic works and objects of everyday life, the history of the Jews who lived and lived in Germany for the past two thousand years. The building that houses the museum is designed by the Polish architect Daniel Libeskind and was inaugurated in 1999. The building has metal facades, windows with capricious shapes and orientations, and the plant with lightning. The main idea conveyed by the building is the void left by the Berlin Jews who disappeared during the Nazi Holocaust. The Holocaust Tower and the Exile Garden are two other buildings belonging to the museum.
The different angles that form the building make the steps oblique with respect to the rooms they communicate, so that the perception becomes complicated. The windows of the Jewish Museum have all directions and very capricious shapes and do not follow any visible order, although these tend to be elongated. Natural light penetrates the interior only when the exterior and interior designs of the windows coincide, which does not always happen. Actually, of the 1005 façade holes, only five coincide completely. To the gaps, Libeskind calls them "the alphabet of the museum". The windows create luminous effects in the interior of the building when the light is reflected in reflecting walls and floors. Many holes reach the floor and ceiling, while crossing. The museum displays objects from the daily life of the Jews, such as paintings and utensils commonly used. Some of these objects spoil the interior design, in the opinion of many, so that they interrupt the continuity of the space.
The facades are made of concrete with an outer covering of sheet metal. This layer is constituted by zinc and titanium panels placed diagonally, not coinciding with the slabs and giving the sensation that the facades are inclined. He designed with great care the shape of the holes in the facades, so he made several drawings detailing their shapes and sizes. There are windows of a size considerably greater than the rest in the facade that looks to the side where the old building is, and in the height of the last floor of the façade opposite to the first one. The building has several doors that face the outside but are not commonly used, so they are camouflaged on the facade with the same type of sheet metal. There is an outdoor patio formed by the facades of the museum in which there is a step in the height of the floor that communicates the two sides of the building. This is diagonal and is the only one in the property with these characteristics. The pavement of this patio is very original because it is made with stones of three colors and forms figures that resemble the gusts of the windows. The great effectiveness of the building's advertising message is reflected in the great commercial success of its souvenir shop, an establishment that sells all kinds of souvenirs from the Jewish Museum in the Berlin Museum.
