The Elisabeth Church is the largest of the upcoming Berlin suburban churches that Karl Friedrich Schinkel built in the 1830s. It is consecrated to St. Elisabeth, is in the Berlin district of Mitte on Invalidenstrasse and belongs to the Evangelical Church Community on Weinberg in the parish of Berlin Stadtmitte. After the certificate in World War II it has been refurbished since 1990.
With the growth of Berlin in the early 19th century, the new building became more churches in the newly developed suburbs. On behalf of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. Schinkel began in 1828 with the first drafts. Requires given simple, controlled buildings without towers and without complex facades. When it comes to suburban churches, we have a general basic concept. The Elisabeth Church and Invalidenstrasse became the theme and comparison of the fullest building under the space for 1,200 people. The construction period was from 1832 to 1834. On June 28, 1835 the church was consecrated. The Crown Princess Elisabeth was present at the inauguration, but her person has lost a role in the naming.
In 1881, the town planning director Hermann Mächt added a town park to this church, which will be restored in 2001 after extensive renovation work.
During an Allied air raid on the night of March 8th to 9th, 1945, the Elizabeth Church was hit by phosphorous fire bombs and burned out. The wooden interiors gave nourishment to the flame evidence. In the following years, in which they are in ruins, there was an agreed reconstruction. It has been sanctioned since 1990. This cannot be changed, in Bau it can be used again as a sacred space instead of thinking about the Sophiengemeinde and too much cultural use. A new church organ is therefore not planted. On March 24th, 2009 Federal President Horst Köhler will give his camete "Berlin Speech" in the not yet obligatory personal of the church.
The flattering, rectangular plastered building was supported in the correct ancient Greek style of Schinkel over two floors on a floor area of 28 meters by 18. The portico in front of the front facing Invalidenstrasse is supported by six Doric pillars; it shows the inscription “The word of the Lord remains in eternity” in capital serif font. Cornices divide the missing outer wall into a base and two upper zones. The side walls are divided by two rows of rectangular windows. The choir has a retracted apse and is flanked by two semicircular extensions (sacristy and baptistery), which were only discovered in 1860. The spacious interior used to be surrounded by three quarters of a two-storey wooden gallery. Like the organ and the wooden coffered ceiling became the Rising Right.
